Every Host Says the Same Thing
Open ten different hosting companies' pricing pages and count how many times you see "blazing fast" or "99.9% uptime guaranteed." Nearly every one uses almost identical language, because those phrases are marketing shorthand, not measurements. A host promising 99.9% uptime and a host promising 99.99% uptime sound close enough to ignore. They aren't, and the gap between what's promised and what actually happens on a budget shared plan is where small businesses get burned.
There's a good chance this applies to you directly. WordPress powers 41.2% of all websites, and 59.1% of sites where the CMS is known. If your site runs on it, your hosting choice affects more of your business than the price-per-month comparison usually suggests. Here's how to read past the marketing copy and evaluate a host on numbers that actually mean something.
What "99.9% Uptime" Actually Means in Hours
Every uptime percentage sounds roughly the same until you convert it into real time. A host guaranteeing 99.9% uptime is allowing itself about 8.76 hours of downtime a year. Move that to 99.95%, and the allowance drops to 4.38 hours. At 99.99%, a host is only permitted about 52.6 minutes of downtime annually. That's the difference between your site going dark for the better part of a workday and going dark for less time than a lunch break.
The bigger problem is that the number on the sales page isn't the number that gets measured independently. Monitoring of shared hosting providers across a panel of more than 300 hosts found real-world uptime falling short of the advertised 99.9% for several well-known budget brands, with DreamHost measured at 99.881%, HostGator at 99.925%, and Bluehost at 99.966%. These aren't fly-by-night operations. They're some of the most recognizable names in budget hosting, and they still landed under their own headline claim. Ask a host for real, independently tracked uptime data before taking their pricing page's word for it.
Uptime Isn't the Only Number That Matters
A host can look fine on an uptime report and still fail you on the one day it counts. Uptime monitoring typically pings a server every few minutes under ordinary conditions, not under the kind of sudden traffic spike that follows a promotion, a local news mention, or a post that unexpectedly takes off. In one independent load test, a budget shared host recorded a 47.6% error rate under simulated real-user traffic, 22,448 failed requests out of 47,156, while several other providers tested in the same benchmark held close to a 0% error rate under identical load. A plan that never technically "goes down" on paper can still buckle exactly when the traffic you worked to earn finally shows up.
Speed Is a Revenue Problem, Not Just a UX Detail
"Fast" gets used as a vague selling point, but the connection between hosting speed and revenue is direct and measurable. Analysis of more than 100 million pageviews across 20 B2B and B2C sites found that e-commerce conversion rates drop by an average of 0.3% for every additional second of load time, and a site loading in one second converts at 2.5 times the rate of one loading in five seconds. That's not a rounding error. That's the difference between a marketing budget that pays for itself and one that quietly leaks money through a slow server.
Speed isn't only a conversion issue, it's a visibility issue too. Google states directly in its own documentation that Core Web Vitals, the metrics closely tied to server response time and page load performance, "are used by our ranking systems," and that page experience "can contribute to success in Search". A host that can't deliver fast page loads isn't just losing you visitors who show up. It's making it harder for new visitors to find you at all.
The Security Case Nobody Puts in the Ad
Hosting marketing rarely talks about security in specific terms, but for WordPress sites, the numbers are hard to ignore. Patchstack's research found 11,334 new WordPress vulnerabilities discovered in 2025, a 42% increase over 2024, and 91% of them were found in plugins, with only 9% in themes. Every plugin installed on a site is a door that has to stay patched.
Here's the part that matters most for choosing a host. In the same research, traditional hosting-level defenses blocked only 12% of WordPress-specific vulnerability attacks in one pentesting study, and only 26% of total attacks in a broader test. A firewall sitting in front of an outdated WordPress installation isn't the protection it's marketed as. And outdated software is the actual failure point in most breaches, not some clever new exploit. Sucuri's research into hacked websites found that 39.1% of hacked CMS sites were running outdated software at the point of infection, and WordPress accounted for 95.5% of all infections Sucuri detected across the web. A host that actively manages core and plugin updates is solving a specific, quantified risk. A host that hands you a control panel and leaves updates to whoever last had time to log in is passing that risk straight back to you.
Managed Hosting Closes a Measurable Speed Gap Too
Security aside, managed WordPress hosting also measurably outperforms standard shared hosting on raw speed. Testing across more than 27,920 speed tests spanning 18-plus hosting providers, run with identical site configurations and measured via WebPageTest from multiple global regions, found managed WordPress hosts loading about 0.4 seconds faster on average than standard shared hosts, 1.11 seconds compared to 1.53 seconds. Feed that gap back into the conversion numbers above and 0.4 seconds stops looking trivial. It's a meaningful share of the conversion rate a business gives up by staying on the budget tier.

Why This Matters More Than It Looks
This isn't a niche concern. WordPress runs a huge share of the working web, and in Canada specifically, the number of businesses with any kind of online presence keeps climbing. Statistics Canada found 89% of Canadian businesses had a web presence in 2021, up from 85% in 2019, and 78% had a company website specifically. More Canadian businesses are online every year, and a large share of them are running that presence on WordPress. A hosting decision that felt low-stakes when the site was just a digital business card starts to matter a lot more once that site is generating leads, taking orders, or serving as most customers' first impression of the business.
What to Actually Look For in a Host
Skip the "blazing fast" and "99.9% uptime" language entirely and ask three questions instead. Does the host publish, or will they share, real independently monitored uptime data, not just a guarantee on a pricing page? Do they actively manage WordPress core and plugin updates, or leave that entirely on you? And have they been tested under real load, not just on a quiet server on an average day?
Price-per-month is the easiest number to compare and the least useful one. A host that costs a few dollars less but leaves updates unmanaged and buckles under a traffic spike will cost far more in lost conversions and recovery time than the difference on the monthly invoice.
